Cross country runners from Lakewood traveled to Bellingham Oct. 20 to compete in the Northwest Conference championships.

“We were really pleased with the way the Lakewood Cougars executed our plan,” cross country coach Jeff Sowards said. The boys team placed fourth and the girls team placed sixth.

Lakewood saw its top five runners finish within a minute of each other. Junior Matthew Hatch placed 12th running in 17:05, junior Gavin Darrah placed 14th running 17:06, senior Jarron Ransford placed 15th running 17:07, sophomore Robert Lydon placed 32nd running 17:38 and senior Joseph Heisley finished 43rd running 18:00.

He mentioned Hatch, Darrah and Ransford were “right near the front.”

The girls team saw senior Kayla Schueller place 28th running 21:11, sophomore Kylie Sahatdjian place 29th running 21:16, freshman Kayly Barrett place 34th running 21:32, freshman Addie Moore place 50th running 22:30 and senior Natalie Neiffer finish 57th running 23:02.

Sowards complimented the leadership of Schueller.

“She has continued to lead our girls in a marvelous way in both word and deed,” Sowards said.

Up next for the Cougars is the District 1 Championships that take place Oct. 30 at Lakewood High School. More than 42 schools from 4A, 3A and 2A classifications will race.

“We look forward to hosting all of those teams and go onto state,” Sowards said.
