Marysville Getchell’s girls golf team traveled to Liberty Lake near Spokane May 24 and May 25 to participate in the 3A state tournament and earned 12th place.
“It was absolutely incredible on how the whole thing played out,” girls golf coach Jaci LeGore Hodgins said of getting to state at Meadowwood Golf Course. The Chargers qualified on the strength of a fifth-place finish at the district tournament. The District 1 allocation for state is five teams. “We’re just really lucky to be going.”
The state tournament is taking place after the season in 2020 was canceled and the 2021 season was shortened and lacked any postseason competition due to COVID-19.
Interlake in Bellevue won the team competition. Bellevue’s Berenice Stolte placed first individually shooting 73 on the first day and 65 on the second day. Marysville Getchell’s golfers didn’t qualify to play on the second day.
Bri Sawyer shot 113 for the Chargers during the tournament, which LeGore Hodgins said was the best round the senior shot.
“Meadowwood is a course that challenged the girls, especially on the back nine,” LeGore Hodgins said.
Brooke Gilbert shot a 116, Kerragyn Heacock shot 136 and Kiyara Green shot 141.
Marysville Getchell’s golf team has a core group of 14 girls, with two having previous golf experience, with the other dozen being new to golf, LeGore Hodgins said. She added the team showed a lot of grit as they competed through hail, wind and rain that was common throughout the spring.
“Everyone had a spirit that is so positive, and they cared for each other,” LeGore Hodgins said and highlighted how active the golfers are at Marysville Getchell. Members of the team are Girl Scouts, play in volleyball, participates in Future Business Leaders of America and a cheerleader.
