The people of Snohomish County elected Adam Fortney as sheriff because they liked his promise to make the county a safer place. Now we hear that, even before all the votes are counted, the county executive Dave Somers wants to usurp the management of the jail from the elected sheriff. The rationale seems to be more "compassion" for jail inmates. Sheriff-elect Fortney did not campaign on compassion for criminals but on safety for the citizens and families of Snohomish County. This includes managing the incarceration and disposition of prisoners. To usurp this critical function would effectively sabotage and negate the results of the 2019 election which, we suspect, is the intention of the county executive (a democrat).
