Immersive programs for students ages 9 to 19 this spring and summer in Marysville
The Red Curtain Arts Center, at 9315 State Ave. #J in Marysville, is now accepting registrations for its popular Springboard program, for young actors ages 9-15, and for the new Summer Stars teen experience, for ages 15 to 19.
Springboard offers a complete performance experience for young actors, from auditions to performance, as the kids present a fully-staged musical theater presentation following a 6-week rehearsal schedule. Students will meet Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., May 20 through June 27 at the Red Curtain Arts Center. Performances of the musical “The Locket” will be presented Friday, June 28, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, June 29, at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Red Curtain’s Director of Youth Theater, Sherry Penoyer, will direct the original musical play, which she also wrote, assisted by a professional musical director, choreographer, and accompanist.
“Theater for children can be especially effective in building critical social and life skills,” noted Penoyer, who also leads Red Curtain’s after-school drama clubs at Marshall and Sunnyside elementary schools, “including self-confidence, time management and organization, teamwork and collaboration, self-discipline, communication and critical thinking skills, and the ability to cope with criticism and learn from it.”
“The Locket” offers roles for up to 35 young actors. A young girl’s quest for a beloved locket is filled with encounters with fantastic forest and swamp creatures, friendly botanical characters, and even a cruel witch. Tuition for the program is $290 per student; a $90 deposit is required at registration, with the balance due by May 20. Although all students who register are guaranteed a role in the show, auditions are set for May 7 and 8, 4:30 to 6 p.m., to better match students with a character in the play.
Summer Stars, led by drama teacher Morgan Heetbrink, is an intensive 6-week program for young actors ages 15-19. The team of actors, instructors, and technicians will produce the musical “Cabaret” with performances August 9-11. Auditions for the show (all registered students are guaranteed to be cast) are set for June 17 and 18, with rehearsals held Sundays through Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m., beginning June 23. Tuition for Summer Stars is also $290.
