A Kiwanis Club that partners with Pirates? Why yes, matey! Our goal..."Fill the Ship".
With the help of The Pirates of Treasure Island, our Kiwanis Club organized a food and shoe drive that brought in 1,600 lbs. of food for the Arlington Food Bank and 400 pairs of shoes for Kids Kloset. Donations included $350 in cash, and the Pirates themselves provided the Food Bank with a check for $500.
Times are tough and more families than ever are struggling to meet the basic needs many of us take for granted. Only in Arlington will people come out in droves to deliver bags of food and boxes of shoes for our neighbors, some simply pulling up along Olympic Ave. and handing their gift to us out the window, while others backed their vehicles up to the Pirate Ship to unload their loot.
Not only did the Arlington community provide donations on Saturday at Legion Park, but both Lakewood and Haller Middle Schools held their own food drives which significantly helped to make this event a huge success.
Kiwanis strives to serve and provide opportunities to the children of Arlington, and through the donations collected during this event, we (the community) are able to ensure that those who might otherwise go without properly fitted shoes, or any shoes at all, will now have the opportunity to remain active and healthy.
Although we cannot possibly thank all those who contributed to this event, we would like to send a special thank you to The Pirates of Treasure Island, Penway Printing, Triple T Trading, Dwayne Lane, Safeway, Arlington High School Jr. ROTC, and the Arlington High School DECA Club for their support and enthusiasm towards ensuring our first annual "Fill the Ship" event was a success.
