Holiday lights still on?

Editor,

It is the last weekend of February and for the last two months I have asked myself the same question while driving down State Street. Why are the tree lights still on?

They were put up around Thanksgiving, and at the time seemed to be a pretty holiday decoration, which don't get me wrong, I enjoyed. However, it is long after the typical holiday season and they still remain.

What makes it worst is that they are on twenty-four hours a day. Not only does this seem to be a waste of money when times are tough for everyone, but it is also an excess use of electricity when most other cities are putting in efforts to help out the environment and "go green."

I am sure there was planning in putting up the lights, and now I think the same planning needs to be done in responsibly turning them off.
