Editor,

Anyone who thinks that local/county elections are not important should think again. The people we elect at all stages of government affect our lives in both good and bad ways. The County Council seat that is currently held by John Koster is being challenged by Ellen Hiatt Watson. I personally have had dealings with both John and Ellen on important matters so I feel I a bit qualified to express my opinions of both.

John Koster likes to pretend he is just a 'good old down home boy' who cares about the welfare of the people in Snohomish County. I don't think this is quite accurate. A great deal of his campaign funding comes from land developers/investors and construction companies. These are not necessarily entities that care about the quality of life in Snohomish County, the environment, traffic, water quality, farm land preservation or wildlife preservation. I also don't see them as priorities of John's. When I wrote to John about an important matter concerning serious problems in our community he could not seem to grasp the seriousness of the problem.

In my dealings with Ellen Hiatt Watson, I see her as very intelligent, articulate and well versed in matters important to all residents of Snohomish County. I do not see her as anti growth or a 'tree hugger,' but I do see her as a person who understands that growth and quality of life must share as equals. I also think it is time to have a woman on the Council. Yes, all elections are very important. Don't forget to vote.
