Public budgets feeling the pinch of decreasing dollars
Editor,
I’ve read the articles about the Snohomish Health District’s budget problems with concern, and now the county also appears to be in financial trouble. This coincides with the state’s projected shortfalls.
All of us are tightening our proverbial belts these days, and it appears that governments and public agencies are feeling the pinch as well. Hopefully our elected leaders can find a way to preserve services at a reasonable level, but I’m sure we’re all in for disappointment on that front.
Most of my friends agree that things will get better after the upcoming election cycle, and I hope they’re right. No matter who ends up in the White House in January, it’s bound to be an improvement over the current occupant.

Thanks for Audubon article
Editor,
Thank you for your support of the Monroe Swift Watch! I thought you might like to have an update.
Last night (September 6) we had some 12,000 Vaux's Swifts swirl about and down into the Frank Wagner Elementary School chimney in Monroe.
And, thanks to your support of our releases, we had some 800 folks in lawn chairs, standing, and sprawled on blankets craning their necks to watch the spectacle.

Editor,
As an amateur bird enthusiast, I am so glad you let us know about the Vaux Swifts returning to Monroe last week. I made my way to Wagner Elementary School, along with hundreds others, for the exciting event. I heard many mentioning your paper, so I think the Audubon Society was fortunate to have the coverage.
Thanks again for covering such interesting and unusual community events.
