Letter to the Editor

Take this opportunity to thank a veteran

Editor,

The "TAKE A VET TO LUNCH" Organization is holding a large dinner at 5 p.m. on September 13, 2008. The location is the Assembly of God Church,  201 N. Stillaguamish Ave. in Arlington.

This dinner is an opportunity for the public to thank a veteran by hosting his or her meal for the dinner. Non-veterans have the opportunity to buy a $15 ticket to attend the dinner, which includes the cost of a dinner for a veteran or their guest. There will be entertainment and a slideshow as well as door prizes of donated items. There are a limited number of tickets available. The dinner will serve up to 200 people, using only volunteers and donations.

Individuals, companies and organizations have the opportunity to host a table, which includes providing table service (plates, utensils, etc.) for 8.

They may decorate the table and advertise their organization or business. They are asked to purchase tickets for themselves and attend the dinner, thus “Taking a Vet to Lunch.” There are still a few tables in need of a host.

Most veterans, when asked about their service to our country, reply, "I didn't DO anything, I was just in.” After they become comfortable, they might share their stories. Our veterans might enjoy hearing that we are grateful they were willing to serve us and our country during times of peace or times of war.

My family will be hosting a table, and we look forward to meeting new friends in a casual environment, and maybe hearing a story or two. We also have a veteran of our own who has served three overseas terms and is still serving.

This event does not intend to make a political statement, nor is it meant to promote or protest our country's current war/peace status.

Bob Rawe is organizing this event and is the contact for purchasing tickets, information about hosting a table, or donating items or food for the event.

He can be reached at (360) 629-5054 or bobsoutback@verizon.net.
