Marysville students were recognized for their academic achievements and community participation at a new Awards Night and Family Dinner on Dec. 5.

The dinner was designed to celebrate students and was held by the Marysville School District, the Marysville Together Coalition and the Parent Advisory Council.

Every school in the district selected students that they wanted to recognize.

"All of the schools picked their own award to give out so they're all unique and different, and it was wonderful to see all of the great kids we have in the district," said Emily Wicks, coordinator of communications with the district.

Local families from all across the district came out to the Marysville-Pilchuck High School Commons for the evening.

This was the first time this particular awards night was held.

"I've never seen something as big and widespread as this," said Grove Elementary Principal Sharon Anderson.

"This is the first time I have been involved in such a wonderful experience," said Cascade Elementary Principal Teresa Iyall Williams.

The event was also meant as a way to recognize students in the first half of the year, instead of most recognition which comes toward the end of the school year.

"What a great opportunity to celebrate our kiddos, and it's not May, so it's awesome to do this early," said Kelly Sheward, Marshall Elementary principal.

"We don't pull families together enough to celebrate the great things the kids are doing," said Marysville School District Superintendent Becky Berg.

Students were recognized for a variety of reasons, from community service to student leadership to academic excellence.

Karis Lewis and McKenzie Vogan from Kellogg Marsh Elementary were recognized for organizing an effort in one of their school's clubs to create 100 care kits for local homeless individuals.

"These girls are being recognized for their community service," said Kellogg Marsh Principal Eneille Nelson.

"They both came up with the idea to create some care kits for our homeless people in the community," she said.

Arts and Technology High School student Shawn Cahoon was honored for his work at the school's computer repair lab and for helping senior citizens learn computer skills.

"A lot of people are afraid to come into a high school to be taught by students," said Arts and Technology High School teacher Paul LeGrange. "He takes as much time as the person needs."

Other students were recognized for being a positive role model to their community.

Marysville-Pilchuck High School student Daniel Amador was recognized with the Marysville School District Pride Award.

"Daniel is bringing a new touch of culture and class to our school," said M-PHS principal Dave Rose. "He holds the door open for every student to come in and eat lunch."

The dinner was a joint effort with help from the Marysville Together Coalition and the Parent Advisory Council.

The Parent Advisory Council gives feedback to district leadership from local parents' perspectives.

"They are advocates for the district and we meet once a month to talk about events like this," said Wicks.

The Marysville Together Coalition is a group of individuals who work to promote wellness and do prevention work in the community through connecting local organizations.
