The Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational was hosted by the Lakewood Cougars on Oct. 7.

The invitational is the largest high school cross country meet every year in Washington state, and this year included 77 high schools and 13 middle school teams. The level of competition ranges from an all-comers race to 3A/4A varsity races.

"I have to always come back to the volunteers and the coaching staff because there is no way that we could put on a meet like this without them. And for our kids, this is a big party for them as we always remind them that even with a huge meet, they are still our number one priority," said Lakewood Head Coach Jeff Sowards.

Lakewood finished 6th in the Division 2 men's varsity race and finished 37th in the Division's women's varsity race. Adam Cross, 17th place, and Spencer Solvberg, 26th place, led the men's team with times of 16:55.7 and 17:10.7, respectively. For the women, the sophomore duo of Callie Buchanan, 133rd place, and Madison Howe, 148th place, led the team with times of 20:39.7 and 20:43.5.

"This is a big race so coming in we are trying to simulate big championship races as we near the end of the season. The kids really competed hard and I'd have to say most of them were able to get their season's best time out here today," said Arlington Head Coach Mike Shierk.

Arlington placed in the top 10 for both men's varsity races, as they finished 2nd in the Division 2 race and 10th in the Division 1. Dawson Andrews, 28th place, and Blake Landry, 35th place, recorded the best times for the Eagles with 16:17.0 and 16:23.7.

The Arlington women also posted scored in both divisions as they finished 9th in Division 2 and 22nd in Division 1. Mary Andrews, 70th place, and Jensyn Smith, 83rd place, both recorded personal records as they ran for times of 19:47.9 and 20:00.9.
