Kindergarten registration for the Arlington and Lakewood school districts begins in early March.

The Arlington and Lakewood school districts are holding kindergarten registration in early March.

Lakewood School District

Parents registering kids for kindergarten in the Lakewood School District can stop by the district's Kindergarten Round-Up on March 8 for information and help.

The open house event is meant to help parents register new kindergarten students for the 2017-18 school year and will be held 5-7 p.m. at the Lakewood High School commons at 17023 11th Ave. NE, Arlington.

"This event provides them with the answers to the many questions new parents have when their child starts school," said Robin Barker, executive administrative assistant for the district.

New parents often want to learn about the programs at their schools, lunch programs, how busing works, among other questions, said Barker.

The Kindergarten Round-Up also helps parents feel more comfortable leaving their children with the schools, as parents have the opportunity to become familiar with the district and meet school administration and staff.

"Beginning school is a major milestone in a child's life and by the school/district providing this opportunity for parents it helps relieve some of the anxiety parents often experience when separating from their child for the first time," said Barker.

Staff on hand at the event are also available to answer questions from parents.

This could include questions about necessary immunizations or specific health needs from health services staff, questions about the establishing lunch accounts or prepaying for meals from the food services staff or questions about the boundaries of busing from the transportation department.

By providing the opportunity for early registration the district is also better prepared with more accurate enrollment numbers for the following year, said Barker.

"When we are able to get actual student enrollment numbers (through the kindergarten registration process) we can better plan for staffing needs, necessary space allocation, and be proactive in additional hiring when necessary," she said.

To register at the event parents must bring immunization records, a birth certificate, proof of address and a completed registration packet.

Registration packets are available at any of the three elementary schools in the district beginning in March.

Elementary campuses in the district include Cougar Creek Elementary School at 16216 11th Ave. NE, Arlington, English Crossing Elementary School at 16728 16th Dr. NE, Marysville and Lakewood Elementary School at 17000 16th Dr. NE, Marysville.

Barker hopes that many of the new parents will be able to attend the open house on March 8.

"We just want to encourage participation and attendance by parents at this event," she said.

If parents are not able to attend the Kindergarten Round-Up they can register in-person at any of the elementary schools after March 8.
