Eagles fall to Squalicum at District tourney
The Arlington boys basketball team matched up against the Squalicum storm for the first round of the District 1, 3A boys basketball tournament on Feb. 11.
From the tipoff both teams came out scoring as they matched baskets back to back. Arlington focused on an inside game as they scored in the paint on most of their early possessions. At the end of the first quarter the Eagles had fallen behind by a score of 20-16. They came out firing in the second and were able to pull ahead, finishing the first half 37-32.
The second half was more of the same as both teams stayed neck and neck for the third quarter. However, the Eagles started off the fourth quarter slow and the Mavericks blew up on an 11-0 run that put them ahead for good. Squalicum finished on top with a score of 68-58.
"We'd been running the sets quite a bit, having some success, and I feel like they started taking that away a little bit. So I wanted to let Drew run around a little bit and make some shots off of broken plays. However, as we did that everyone started standing and that's why I had to call a timeout to get them back in it. We started hitting a dry spell, but that's what happens when you're playing with five or six sophomores against a team of seniors, and they're good. No excuses, but they did everything right and we didn't," said Arlington Head Coach Nick Brown.
Drew Bryson led the Eagles once again with a team high 19 points, while also adding on six rebounds and two assists. The other Arlington senior, Sam Tregoning, had the second most points, 14, and filled up the stat sheet with five rebounds, an assist and three steals. The Arlington Eagles will be taking on the Meadowdale Mavericks in a loser-out game on Feb. 15, at 7 p.m.
