'The Coats' concert supports LHS music

Pacific Northwest band “The Coats” will return to Arlington this December in support of the Lakewood High School jazz choir “Swingbeat.”

The concert, which includes both “The Coats” and opening numbers by “Swingbeat,” will be held on Dec. 12 at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center at Arlington High School.

Doors open at 7:10 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $18 in advance and $22 at the door.

This is the third annual concert featuring the two groups, and profits raised benefit the North Lakewood Music Booster Organization which supports music programs at Lakewood High School.

Both “The Coats” and “Swingbeat” will be performing holiday jazz numbers as part of the concert.

Katy Trapp, band director at Lakewood High School, said the concert provides a good holiday night for families.

“It’s a super fun night,” said Trapp.

“The Coats” are a Seattle-based group. “They are a nationally recognized a cappella group,” said Trapp.

They are also known for the acts they put on during their shows, she said.

“‘The Coats’ are also partially a comedy act, so there’s going to be a lot of laughing as well,” said Trapp.

Some of the profits from the show go toward Lakewood High School’s music programs.

“Instead of their normal payment they split half of the profits for our music program,” said Trapp.

Those funds help pay for instruments, equipment and fees to enter jazz festivals.

Last year, funds raised helped pay for things like two new amps, repairing a bass, a new snare for the marching band and fees to enter some of this year’s festivals.

“We just got back from a jazz festival where we were picked best in the show,” she said.

Swingbeat was at the Eastern Washington University Dialogue Invitational Festival which took place this November.

The jazz choir was honored as the pick for Outstanding Jazz Choir at the festival and one Lakewood student was picked as the Outstanding Vocal Soloist as well.

The benefit concert will also collect coats as part of the “Coats for Coats” project. All coats collected will be given out by St. Joseph’s House, a homeless mission in Seattle, with the help of officials from St. Ann’s Catholic Church.

Every person who brings in a coat will also be entered into a drawing for a couple of prizes from “The Coats.”

The concert is at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center at 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd., Arlington. Tickets are $18 online. For more information or for tickets visit http://thecoatsholiday.bpt.me. For more information on “The Coats” go to http://www.thecoats.net.
