Jelly Perry and Tehanna Goodall block a spike for the point in the second set at Lakewood High School on Oct. 20.

The Lakewood girls volleyball team took on the Lynden Lions, for their Senior Night, on Oct. 18.

Through the first set it looked like the Lions were on their way to pulling out an upset over the 7-2 Cougars. Finishing with a score of 25-17, Lynden went into the next set with confidence. However, Lakewood had other plans as they settled down and took control of the next three sets with scores of 25-14, 25-19 and the match clinching 25-21.

"I think our defense was a lot better after the first set. We were recovering, got the balls up and we got our offense running. All of our hitters stepped up. Every set, when it came their way, they were putting the ball away and our middles were really effective by blocking and hitting on every possession. It was an all-around team effort and there wasn't just one person to stop. Everyone was going after it, and it was awesome," said Lakewood Head Coach Tasha Kryger.

Led by their core group of seniors, Mariah Jensen, setter, Nicole Williamson, hitter, and Jenna Melton, libero, the Cougars are rolling through the season. With two losses in league play Lakewood has their eyes on progressing deep into the postseason.

"We are going to look at different defenses and possibly have some other people play in the back row. We're really focusing on what our goals are. These are kind of the dog days of the season right now. Everyone is kind of tired, we don't know what's going on, but we're 8-2 and we're looking really good. We need to stay consistent. We've been up and down, but we need to keep it going," said Coach Kryger.

This was Lakewood's last home game of the regular season. Their last game of the season will be away against the Blaine Borderites on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m.
