Health District seeks public input

Arlington City Council was scheduled to hear a presentation from Snohomish County Health District’s Jeff Ketchel, environmental health director and Peter Mayer, deputy director and chief operating officer.

The health district is campaigning for a per capita funding request.

A Power Point presentation included in the council agenda provides background to the contributions of the health district through the century and states that its funding is 34th out of 35 such public health agencies in the state. With a 22 percent decrease in funding since 2005, the district has eliminated 74 full-time employees since 2008.

The district’s $15.8 million budget is supported by licenses and permits (22 percent), state and federal grants (24 percent) and other discretionary funds (22 percent), charges for services (14 percent) and 17 percent from the county.

The district has identified its primary 21st Century issues: emerging diseases, childhood obesity, marijuana and vaping, opioid epidemic, health housing, adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress and other social aspects of health.

The Snohomish County Health District is asking the cities, towns and the county to contribute the $2 for each resident to help pay for efforts in homeless camps and training for school district staff and families, among its many other services managing public health.

Other council business

After the July 2016 Financial Report presented by Finance Director Kristin Garcia, Garcia was scheduled to launch the city’s 2017-2018 budget discussion with a PowerPoint presentation to provide an overview of general fund revenue categories, basic assumptions used in preliminary projections, a review of financial policies and an outline for our next budget discussion.

There was no other city business at this Monday’s workshop.
