The annual Airport Appreciation Day returns to the Arlington Airport on Aug. 27 and offers a day of free aviation-oriented activities for the entire family.

"We want to encourage kids and their families to come out and have a great time. There are a lot of fun activities for the entire family to do," said Lorene Parker, airport coordinator and organizer of the event. "The Airport Appreciation Day gives kids the opportunity to see that they might want a career in aviation."

While there will be a variety of activities to introduce kids to aviation, one of the most popular is the free airplane rides provided by the Young Eagles program.

"The Young Eagles from the Experimental Aircraft Association will be giving free airplane rides to kids between the ages of 8-17. It's a really good program and we love to see the Young Eagles here because the kids are always so enthusiastic to fly."

A number of free activities will take place on the ramp, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., such as aircraft displays which will include a TBM Avenger, simulators and hands-on aircraft, and activities for the kids including a bubble pool and hula hoops.

In addition to the activities on the ramp, there will be a variety of free fun activities. At AFS there will be a free barbecue lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., a bouncy house will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Bringer Farm will be offering tractor rides from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., At the Arlington Airport office parking lot face painting will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., customize and paint your own wooden airplane at the Paint Your Airplane which runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., helicopter tours will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can meet the men and women of the Arlington Police and Fire departments which will also have a variety of vehicles on display form 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a Rescue Run 5K/10K hosted by the Arlington Runners Club is at 9 a.m., and free EAA Young Eagle airplane rides for kids ages 8-17 will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,

In addition to all of the free activities, Parker added that there would be two flight activities that include a fee.

"There will be helicopter rides offered by Friday Harbor Helicopters and Evergreen Soaring will be offering glider rides," said Parker. "Both will have a fee."

Parker said she wanted to thank all of the sponsors and participants of the 2016 Arlington Airport Appreciation Day. "We really appreciate all of the sponsors who are making this possible," said Parker. "And we're really thankful for all of our Young Eagle pilots and local pilots who come out and give the kids such a wonderful introduction to flying."

The Arlington Airport office is located at 18204 59th Ave. NE and AFS is located 1881059th Dr. NE.
