The next Arlington School District superintendent will be Chrys Sweeting, currently the assistant superintendent of the Puyallup School District.

She will start at the Arlington School District at the beginning of July.

Current Arlington School District superintendent Kris McDuffy is taking over as the superintendent of Edmonds School District after working for Arlington since 2008.

The Arlington School Board has spent the past eight weeks running focus groups with parents, staff, students and community members and narrowing down the original 17 applicants.

On June 7, 8 and 9 the three finalists for the position were invited for day-long interviews and public forums with community members.

They announced on June 10 that Chrys Sweeting will be the next Arlington School District superintendent.

"I've been so amazed by the team in Arlington and the cooperation between the community and staff and the city," said Sweeting.

"The staff and the students are committed to learning," she said.

"The board would like to thank the entire Arlington community for their support throughout the superintendent search," said board president Ursula Ghirardo in a press release. "We are excited to welcome Dr. Chrys Sweeting to the team, and bring the depth and breadth of her experience to bear on our future endeavors," she said.

Sweeting said she has always been very passionate about education.

"My calling is definitely in working with young adults and adults," she said. "It's a core part of me to want to make others the best people they can be, not only students but also adults as well," she said.

She has been a teacher assistant, teacher, curriculum specialist, assistant principal, principal and executive director of special services.

"I've been in education for 32 years and that's given me a solid foundation of experience," said Sweeting.

She taught in the Ellensburg School District and the Federal Way School District, and served in administrative positions in the Federal Way School District and the Puyallup School District.

The scope of her work continued to expand as her career advanced, she said.

"I kept on going to larger perspectives to support the whole system," she said.

Currently, in the 22,000 student Puyallup School District she serves as the assistant superintendent, where she has worked since 2001 where she began as an assistant principal.

"Her leadership style is collaborative and she believes in educating the whole child so that each can reach their full potential," said Ghirardo.

Sweeting has earned her bachelor's degree from Central Washington University and her master's and doctorate from the University of Washington.

"I'm very excited to come join this Arlington team and be an active member of the community," she said, and noted that she and her husband are already looking for a place to buy in town.
