Arlington City Council addresses variety of issues

At this Monday’s Arlington City Council meeting, on June 6, council was scheduled to vote on promoting Jonathan Ventura to police chief. Ventura has been serving as assistant chief this past year.

Later in the meeting, after the vote, Police Chief Ventura was scheduled to be sworn, making it official on the spot, along with two other police department positions: Police Officer Kyle Strand and Police Sergeant Peter Barrett.

In recent years Bruce Stedman, as safety director, has been head of both the fire department and the police department. His contract expires this month.

No appointment has been made publicly for the fire chief position, but a dedication ceremony was planned this Monday night for some new fire apparatus.

The new police chief will make over $137,000 annually during the rest of this year and next year will make $141,360.

As a contract position, the appointment by the mayor is subject to confirmation of council.

Organizers of Smokey Point Clean Up Day were scheduled to give a presentation Monday night.

June was to be proclaimed General Aviation Month and council was expected to approve items discussed at the May 23 workshop meeting, including contracts for striping and thermoplastic road markings, pavement preservation projects, and to hire Brown/Caldwell for development of a new water well to replace a failing airport well.

Staff requested approval to hire Reece Construction for water main projects costing $1,681,000.

Staff requested permission to add more services in an amendment for construction inspections in a contract with Perteet and council was expected to vote to hire a company, O’Neill Service Group, for reviewing development projects, and to award a contract with McGrath Human Resources Group for a comprehensive study of all city staff salaries except the administrator and those in uniform.
