Oso Slide Remembrance Events


Local organizations will hold many events to commemorate this coming weekend in honor of the community of the Stillaguamish Valley and the victims of the Oso landslide. Those events are compiled below:

March 20 – Darrington Gathering in Hope

Music, prayers and messages of hope will be delivered at the Darrington Community Center, 570 Sauk Ave., Darrington. Event begins at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

March 21 – Darrington Library Dedication

The Darrington Library invites the public to attend this dedication. The library’s community room will be named in honor of the late library manager Linda McPherson who was among the 43 people who died from the Oso landslide. Library at 1005 Cascade St., and event begins at 11 a.m.

March 21 – Rhodes River Ranch Benefit

The Rhodes River Ranch will host live music and a live auction that will benefit the Oso Fire Department and the Oso Fireman’s Association. Doors open at 1 p.m. Music from the Mosaics choir and orchestra and others.

March 22 – Slide Remembrance in Oso

This hour-long event near the site of the landslide includes bell ceremony, flag raising, honor guard, and drum and pipe salutes. At the request of families, no formal speeches are scheduled.

“It’ll be a solemn ceremony. A time to reflect, both on the pain and the pride of the community,” said Arlington Mayor Barbara Tolbert.

The event is expected to start shortly before 10 a.m. A portion of SR 530 will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon for the remembrance.

March 22 – Ride to the Slide

Decorate your motorcycle to show support for Oso and Darrington at Sound Harley in Smokey Point and then ride to Rhodes River Ranch. Sign-in begins at 10 a.m.

March 22 – Oso Fire Dept. Open House

After the WSDOT road closure of SR 530 the Oso Fire Department will hold an open house and soup social for visitors. The fire department is at 21824 WA-530, Arlington, and will open from noon to 4 p.m.

March 22 – Darrington Potluck Social

The Darrington Community Center will host this pie/potluck social. The center is located at 570 Sauk Ave., Darrington.
