Marysville awards $90,000 in tourism grants

The Marysville City Council on Nov. 25 awarded $90,000 in hotel-motel tourism grants that will fund costs associated with the Marysville Strawberry Festival, a holiday lighting tour at Cedarcrest Golf Course, and other festivals and events.

The following projects were recommended by the Hotel/Motel Tax Grant Committee and adopted by the City Council:

• $30,000 to the City of Marysville for special event support services;

• $25,000 for Marysville Strawberry Festival annual festival costs;

• $20,000 to the Chamber of Commerce for visitor and tourism support;

• $5,000 for Merrysville for the Holidays promotional campaign;

• $5,000 for the Holiday Tour of Lights at Cedarcrest Golf Course;

• $2,750 to the City for a Tourism/Economic Development Sub-Website;

• $1,250 to Marysville Dog Owners Group for Poochapalooza; and

• $1,000 for the Scrub-A-Mutt Fundraising Dog Wash.

Projects are funded on a reimbursement basis, with awards granted to projects that enhance and promote the city’s tourism market, says Gloria Hirashima, Chief Administrative Officer. The fund was created under state law by a per-bed tax assessed on hotels and other overnight accommodation establishments.

City Councilmember Kamille Norton chaired the committee, which conducted interviews with the applicants on Nov. 6.
