Marysville Pilchuck High School graduating seniors received more than $400,000 at the school's "Evening of Awards" on June 4, marking one of the most accomplished classes Principal Andrew Frost has ever seen.

Nearly 30 different scholarships were given to students, which totaled more than $400,000. Many scholarships were provided by local businesses and organizations, but some students received state or national awards that included the Coca-Cola Scholar or the Costco Diversity Scholarship.

Counting scholarships received outside of the event, the 2012 class has now exceeded $2 million in scholarship money.

"This has been the coolest classes I've ever had, and I'm not just saying that because I'm your principal and it's the end of the year. This class has simply been phenomenal," said Frost at the event.

The night of awards was also meant to announce the recipients of scholarly awards and the 2012 Marysville-Pilchuck High School class received many.

More students received Washington State Honors than have ever before at M-PHS. All five of the nominees picked by the school's faculty for National Honors awards received an award. Two students received Washington State Governor's Awards, the highest academic award in the state.

"The entire class has been spurring each other on for success, but it wasn't in a cutthroat competitive way. It was from an 'I want everyone to be successful' environment," said Frost.

Students like brother and sister Corey and Courtney Coombs know that their environment has propelled them forward, as they attribute their accomplishments to being competitive with each other and also to the guidance of their parents.

"We are very competitive with each other. We've competed at everything since we were young. We always play tennis now," said Corey.

Corey and Courtney were both recognized as two of the six valedictorians for the 2012 class and each received the Tomahawk Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Corey received eight other scholarships and awards over the night and Courtney received seven.

They are planning to go to the University of Washington next year to study pre-medicine.

The twins said they were happy with what they've accomplished and their high school years. "I feel like I didn't waste my four years here and I'm happy with all I've accomplished," said Corey.

Many students received awards for their diligence with academics and their leadership in the community, like Summer Cull.

She volunteers for programs like Big Buddy and is an assistant basketball coach for the Special Olympics. Cull has taken on leadership roles at school like senior class historian as well. Her hard work brought her six scholarships and three awards during the event.

"I'm definitely honored by all the awards," she said. "I wasn't expecting to get this many [awards] and I'm happy that people respect my hard work."

Frost noted that members of this graduating class have a strong future ahead.

"Obviously they are very academically accomplished, but it's not just academics. They have great personalities," said the principal. "I think this is a graduating class that Marysville, as a community, will be proud of."
