Staci Tuck, the Marysville School District's Pen Pal coordinator, welcomed dozens of elementary students, their teachers and mentors for a special afternoon celebrating the literacy program's success.

The ELL youngsters were treated to snacks, gifts and a performance of "The Lorax" by actors from Book-It! Repertory Theater.

The Pen Pal program is in its fifth year in the district, and has expanded from one school and seven adult mentors to seven elementary schools and 94 mentors.

Pen Pal mentors read the same books as the students, then they correspond about the book and other topics of interest to the children.

The party for elementary school students was fully funded by a grant from the Everett Elks Club.

"The grant covered transportation to the party for the students, the actors from Book-It! Theater, the treats, party decorations, the CDs everyone got, and the goodie bags for each student," said Elks member Linda Averill. "The goodie bags contained a book (The Lorax) pens, pencils, pencil topper, notepad and other items."
