Monday night, Jan. 23, the Lady Tomahawks traveled to Mariner High School to take on the Marauders. In a dominating display of teamwork and discipline, the Tomahawks pulled out a convincing 44-21 win.
With superior control under the hoop, disciplined zone defense and great shooting from the line, the Tomahawks were in complete control from jump ball to the end buzzer.
"This was a real uplifting game for us tonight," said Tomahawk head coach Julie Martin. "We need to build off this and use it for our game against (first place) Arlington on Wednesday."
Coach Martin used an extensive substitution strategy reminiscent of line changes in hockey, substituting all five players at a time in order to keep the players fresh and let them all get in some good floor time.
With the help of 5'11" sophomore Jordan Bengen and 6'1" senior Jessica Boyle, the Tomahawks' rebounding on both sides of the court helped the offense jump out to an early lead, and the Marauders never recovered.
"I am not sure how many points she scored, but Jordan was awesome on the boards tonight," said Coach Martin.
Sophomore guards Amanda Klep and Charlee Pilon led the Tomahawk offense with 13 and 9 points respectively.
"Amanda had a great game tonight, even with a sore ankle. She is our energizer bunny," Coach Martin said.
The varsity team has six sophomores on the roster. "I am really excited about that, they got a lot of playing time tonight, and I thought they did really well," said the coach.
