Voters in the Arlington School District will be asked to approve a four-year replacement levy in February to support school programs and operations. The local funding provides 27 percent of the district's total operating budget.

The levy is not a new tax, but a renewal of a current tax that expires at the end of 2012. The cost to homeowners is estimated to be the same--$3.57 per $1,000 assessed valuation-for the first two years of the new levy, but will be slightly lower in 2015 and 2016.

Operations levy dollars support necessary school operations, including teaching materials, transportation, staffing, special education, extracurricular activities, and safety/emergency preparedness.

The district has planned several community and staff meetings to answer questions about the proposed levy and present funding facts; all are open to the public. Planned meetings are scheduled for Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. at Eagle Creek Elementary; Jan. 17, 7 a.m., at the ASD Board Room; Jan. 17, 6:30 p.m., Haller PTSA; and Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Arlington High School Library.

Ballots will be mailed Jan. 27, and must be returned by Feb. 14.
