January 18 is a shortened school day in Marysville, with teachers on furlough (unpaid time) shortly after students are dismissed.

All teachers will be off work by about 11:30 a.m., and the Marysville Education Association (MEA) has asked teachers at each school to gather at intersections along State Avenue. Teachers will wear red and have signs focusing attention on the proposed state budget cuts.

The Marysville School District has made $21 million in cuts over the past four years, and the governor's proposed cuts for next year would require another $6 million in reductions.

In a release from MSD, administrators note, "The governor's proposal hurts students in property poor districts like Marysville twice as much as richer school districts."

Teachers, administrators and union leaders hope the teachers' visible presence on Jan. 18-at a time when they would prefer to be in the classroom-underscores the district's concerns over the legislature's obligation to fund education.
