Arlington High School music students who are selected to be part of Jazzmine must be prepared to work hard, but the results are worth all the rehearsals and after-school practice.

The jazz choir, directed by Lyle Forde, performs five musical stage shows each year, with "Jazzin' Around the World" set to open this weekend. The show is a dramatic musical stage show that will transport the audience around the world through music.

The choir will visit the Beatles' Abbey Road, go to the Caribbean, then travel to India, Africa, Paris, New York, and New Orleans. Join the students as they go California Dreamin', then to Funky town and maybe even into outer space.

The productions help the students grow musically while raising funds to pay for an annual trip to an out-of-state jazz competition. Over the last three years, Jazzmine has traveled to Fullerton, CA, for the Fullerton Jazz Festival and to Texas to the North Texas Jazz Festival. They have earned first place twice and placed second one time, all while competing in the advanced division.

This year Jazzmine was one of eight schools nationwide that were invited to perform and compete at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. The Monterey Festival is a very prestigious audition-only festival, and it is an honor to be accepted.

Jazzmine will perform at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Feb. 26 and 27 and March 5 and 6. A Sunday matinee is planned for March 7 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. For tickets and information, visit www.byrnesperformingarts.org.
