At the Arlington School Board's February 8 meeting, the 2010-2011 enrollment projection was set at 5,100 students. This FTE (full-time equivalent) number, which drives the entire budgeting process, is the same as that set last year for the current school year.

"Like other private and public agencies as well as community members, Arlington Public Schools face challenges and opportunities with finances and facilities," said district spokesperson Misti Gilman. "Last year we had to make up a $3.8 million budget shortfall. This year we face approximately $2.5 million in reductions. Reductions will still be difficult and painful, but we will rise to the challenge of maximizing the opportunities and maintaining our focus on our core mission - student achievement."

To date, no decisions regarding budget cuts have been made.

The current legislative session is set to end March 11, with revenue forecasts released in late February. Once the state budget is known, individual districts will begin the tough job of identifying program and staff cuts.

Layoff notices for teachers must be delivered by May 15.

The final budget for the district will be adopted in August, just prior to the start of school in the fall.

The district is launching a dedicated budget page on its Web site (www.asd.wednet.edu). Parents and community members are also encouraged to contact Gilman by e-mail at MGilman@asd.wednet.edu or by phone at (360) 618-6207. Superintendent Kristine McDuffy can be reached at KMcDuffy@asd.wednet.edu or (360) 618-6202.
