Drawings, letters and cards written by Arlington students to thank police officers for their dedication are displayed proudly at the Arlington Police Department.

The public schools encouraged students to show appreciation for the officers' service and protection, but many also expressed grief over the recent loss of the four police officers from Lakewood. Illustrations of police cars, officers in uniform and even an officer apprehending a "bad guy" are heartwarming proof of the youngsters' gratefulness.

A second-grader wrote, "Dear Officers, Thank you for protecting Arlington and protecting our community. And helping our schools. Thank you for keeping our people safe. Thank you for being brave for Arlington. Thank you for making us better people. Your friend, Caroline."

Hunter, a first-grader, wrote, "I am happy you protect me from danger. I hope you help other people. I wish those other officers were still alive. I hope there are no other bad people."

The police department was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and thanks shown by the elementary school students. Chief Robert Sullenberger noted, "They are heartwarming to read."
