Two Marysville service clubs, the Kiwanis and Soroptimists, work together each month to identify and honor exceptional students, one boy and one girl, from the district. The clubs review resumes and conduct personal interviews to make the monthly selections, and the students are presented with a framed certificate at a Marysville School Board meeting. At the end of the school year, both the Kiwanis and Soroptimist organizations select a Student of the Year and award scholarships.
For September 2009, the students of the month were Cali Cull and Shane Price.
Cali, a senior at M-PHS, is an honor roll student with a cumulative GPA of 3.992. A student athlete, she was also selected as Health and Fitness Scholar of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year during the 2006-07 school year.
Cali participates in volleyball, basketball and track and field at the high school, and holds several school records in track.
An active volunteer in the community, Cali works with Operation Marysville Community Christmas and has helped with Centralia flood relief efforts , Miracle on State Street, and Acts of Random Kindness.
Shane Price is ASB president at M-PHS, where he is a senior this year. With a 3.96 cumulative GPA, Shane is an exceptional student who also thrives with school and community involvement.
Shane has served as emcee for several school events, as well as a student leadership conference sponsored by Josten's his junior year. That same year Shane had microphone duties for the Walk of Honor recognition assembly and MP's Got Talent evening talent show.
The senior is a dedicated mentor to younger students too, serving as co-chair of the Freshmen Mentor Program for the last two years. Shane exemplifies student leadership as the coordinator of Facilitator Training for R.S.V.P. (Raising Student Voice and Participation), and as a representative at the Washington Association of Student Councils and National Association of Student Councils. Currently Shane serves as Executive Board President for WASC.
Shane also finds time for sports activities, having played tennis, soccer and golf while in high school.
The October students of the month are Sarah Clark and Garrett Davis. Both are seniors at M-PHS.

Sarah maintains a 3.91 GPA while pursuing a "rigorous course of study" that includes many AP and honors classes. A member of National Honor Society her junior and senior years, she is also a varsity athlete, participating in diving and track and field competitions.
She is also an active member of You've Gotta Love This Place (YGLTP), a leadership and school spirit group, and helped organize Halloween Funfest, Homecoming and Coronation Assembly events. Sarah is active with ASB and enjoys the challenges of student government.
Involvement with her church is also important to Sarah, and she has participated in several mission trips to the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Mazatlan over the years.
Garrett, a 4.0 student, balances his academic pursuits with his athletic interests. During high school, Garrett has played football, basketball and baseball, and is a member of the M-PHS Tomahawk varsity football team this year.

As part of his community involvement, Garrett has also participated in a fundraising golf tournament and the M-PHS Twilight Cross Country Meet. He volunteered to help with an annual community shredding event this spring, and got muddy helping with the Quilceda Creek Restoration Project.
Garrett has been a member of the National Honor Society since 2007, and he received a Presidential Certificate of Academic Excellence in 2007.
Garrett enjoys spending time with younger students, and is a mentor for the Marysville Youth Football Camp and the Marysville AAU Basketball camp.
Congratulations to these exemplary students.
