About 60 volunteers, including school staff, parents and students, met at Allen Creek Elementary on August 29 for a day of cleanup work to get the school spruced up for the beginning of school.

Led by the PTSA's Beautification Committee, the project had been in the planning stages since late last spring. The committee worked with the school's principal, district maintenance staff and the school custodian to plan the pre-school event. The district supplied the paint and materials while volunteers provided the manpower.

"This comes at a time when budget reductions have forced some reduction to the district's workforce, and is greatly appreciated by the Marysville School District," said spokesperson Jodi Runyon.

Allen Creek principal Kristin DeWitte was impressed by the helpers but not surprised. "We are fortunate to have great parent participation at our school, and there are lots of kids out here too. It's good to see the building's 12-year-old paint being refreshed."

The day's work included painting, weeding, picking up trash, and general TLC to the building exterior.

"It was a perfect day," said PTSA president Kimberly DeLap. "The front of the school sparkles again."
