Part of preparing for school is the required list of vaccinations for new and returning students. Families are encouraged to visit their health care provider for vaccinations, but if the student doesn't have a regular provider, the Snohomish Health District can help.

Required vaccines for the 2009-2010 school year include the pneumococcal vaccine (PCV) for children attending child care or preschool. This is a new requirement and can be a four-shot series, depending on the child's age.

For pre-kindergartners, age 16 months and up, one dose of the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine is required. Two doses are required for students in kindergarten and first grade. A doctor-verified history of the disease can be substituted for the vaccine.

Students in grades 2, 3 and 6 are required to have one dose of varicella or parental history of a chickenpox incident.

Finally, the adolescent pertussis vaccine (Tdap) is required for students in grades 6, 7 and 8.

Health experts also recommend the meningococcal vaccine for adolescents age 11 and older and a two-shot series of hepatitis A for children 12 months and older.

From now through September 4, appointments are available during normal clinic hours at the Health District Everett office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. Walk-in visits are open from 1 to 4 p.m.

Children coming to the clinic must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and must bring a complete immunization record.

Payment for Health District services are requested at the time of service, in cash or by check. Medical coupons are accepted, but private insurance is not, and district offices do not accept debit or credit cards. Reduced fees are available by request, based on household size and income.

To schedule an appointment, phone (425) 339-5220.
