Want to help create better relationships with foreign countries and make lifelong friends with people worldwide? Consider hosting a foreign exchange student for the upcoming school year.
Charla Mosbrucker of Marysville, a representative with the Council on International Exchange (CIEE) recently attended the CIEE Grants Local Coordinator Training in Washington, D.C. Mosbrucker has worked with the nonprofit agency for ten years and was invited to be part of this year's training in the nation's capital. The training prepared Mosbrucker to mentor and place high school exchange students from one of three international scholarship-based programs.
Through the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX), Youth Exchange and Study (YES) and American Serbia and Montenegro Youth Leadership Exchange (A-SMYLE), international students can earn a grant to participate in a student exchange program. In order to receive one of these unique grants, high school students go through a highly competitive and diverse selection process based on their English ability, grades, positive attitude and motivation among other criteria.
"Meeting these students can teach so much more than a book ever could," said Mosbrucker.
She is working with several grant students to find warm and loving host families in the area. She has four students who are slated to attend Marysville-Pilchuck High School next year, including girls from Ukraine and Serbia and boys from Saudi Arabia and Tajikistan.
She is also working with two students who will attend Arlington High School, boys from Kenya and Turkey.
All students have their own medical insurance and spending money. They have high English scores, like pets and have no allergies.
"Host families do not need to have teenagers at home themselves," Mosbrucker explained. "Young families and empty nesters can also have the opportunity to host one of these exceptional students."
Due to schools and program deadlines, all the students must be placed by June 10.
