From glass mosaics to original photography and textiles, young Arlington artists showed off their wares and made a little pocket change at the annual Art Fair, held Saturday, May 2 in the lobby of the Byrnes Performing Arts Center.

Austin Smith, a sophomore at Weston High School, displayed an impressive array of photographic landscapes, florals and pastoral settings. The beauty of the images were enhanced by the professional-looking matting, which was the contribution of Lisa Smith, Austin's mom.

"There are so many depressing things in life, I just want to focus on the beauty around us," said Austin.

He plans to attend Arlington High School next year for classes in digital photography.

Friends Jessica Kupczak and Sam Atwood are out of school, 2008 graduates of AHS who now run a business known as Peacetime Creations. The girls had a selection of beautiful glass jewelry and decorative items along with mosaic creations for sale.

"We go to street fairs in the summer and try to find other opportunities for sales," said Jessica.

They have their own glass kiln now, but Sam and Jessica learned their trade through art classes at AHS.

Then there's Jennifer Brown, a junior at AHS who makes interesting headgear.

"They're ear hats," she explained. "They're very popular at animé conventions and things like that."

She is able to customize the cute hats, which she makes at home, for a buyer's favorite color or animal.

"People love them, and I love to make them," she said with a smile.

The annual Art Fair was accompanied by a silent auction organized by the AHS Key Club and plant sales by horticulture students at the school's greenhouse.
