An Arlington teacher and a local non-profit organization have been selected to receive awards from the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Region 109. WASA will recognize award winners at a special luncheon in May.

Sarah CoferSarah Cofer, a second-grade teacher at Presidents Elementary, will receive the Student Achievement Leadership Award. Cofer is also the school's Respect Program Coordinator and a math teacher on special assignment.

In recognizing Cofer's achievements, WASA administrators especially focused on her facilitation of math in-service days, which helped teachers understand state performance expectations. She created and aligned math assessments, helping propel the district's elementary math curriculum to a new level of achievement.

Cofer also works tirelessly in her role of Respect Program Coordinator, empowering students to positively impact the climate of their schools and their community. When racist vandalism appeared in the community, she was the first person on the scene to help residents clean up.

Administrators will honor Arlington Kids' Kloset, a non-profit service organization, with the Community Leadership Award.

Kids KlosetKids' Kloset opened in September 2005 with a mission to "enhance learning through nurtured self-esteem." The volunteer organization has provided clothing free of charge to children in need in Arlington and neighboring school districts, outfitting more than 1,000 children this school year.

In addition to clothing donations from the community, Kids' Kloset also receives financial support from private donors, local businesses and grants.

Lead volunteers Ginger Bates and Carol Kammerzell worked together over the past year to add a Prom Room with formal dresses and accessories, making it easy for girls to find a special outfit in a supportive and discreet environment.

The volunteers at Kids' Kloset logged more than 2,300 hours last year, providing services that range from sorting and ironing donations to mopping floors.
