Patrons of live theater have some interesting choices later this month as both Arlington and Marysville high schools present spring productions on the same two weekends.

Reaching back to the 1930s to mount a classic comedy for the whole family, Arlington High School students will bring the zany "You Can't Take It With You" to the Byrnes Performing Arts Center for four performances, April 24-25 and May 1-2, at 7:30 p.m.

In this timeless Moss Hart-George S. Kaufman comedy, young love is almost sabotaged by the wackiest family ever assembled. The two "normal" young lovers must find a way to peacefully blend Tony's money-hungry parents and Alice's familial collection of individualists pursuing their own versions of personal happiness. Chaos ensues, interesting characters come and go, and love triumphs over all.

"We've rolled back prices to 1936 to make this pleasing to your pocketbook and your family," reads the school's press release. Tickets are priced at $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and students, and are available at the door or at www.byrnesperformingarts.org.

At Marysville-Pilchuck High School, the students are tackling a more modern musical comedy, "The Wedding Singer." Based on the Adam Sandler film, "The Wedding Singer" was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, during its Broadway run.

Set in 1985, the show gives students lots of opportunity to experiment with big, bad hair, wide shoulders and synthetic fabrics. M-PHS senior Nick Poling deftly tackles the title role that calls for self-confident swagger and tender vulnerability.

"The Wedding Singer" has six performances planned, with 7:30 p.m. showtimes on April 23-25, April 30, May 1 and 2. Tickets are available at the door.
