High school bands from around Snohomish County will take over the Byrnes Performing Arts Center at Arlington High School on March 25 and 26 for the Mount Pilchuck Music Educators Association (MPMEA) Large Group Band Festival.

The annual event has been held at various schools over the past few decades, and this is the second consecutive year AHS will play host. Festival activities run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Last year the judges were impressed with Arlington's new concert hall. Steve Ross, retired from 20 years of teaching at Monroe High School and a former MPMEA president said, "It's spectacular. It's definitely in the top 2 percent of all the venues we have used."

Bruce Gutgesell, a retired band director from Kirkland and another judge of last year's festival, was also impressed. "What a wonderful gift from the community. It's fantastic for the kids to experience something like this."

The Arlington High School Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will be among those participating in the March festival.

The event is non-competitive, but participants will be rated and will receive feedback from expert adjudicators Ken Noreen, Bruce Gutgesell, Steve Ross and Lylburn Layer to further build on their musical talents. Each band will work their way through a three-stage process, warming up in the school's choir room, proceeding into the PAC where they will be judged on a 20-minute performance, and ending with a clinic in the school's band room with one of the adjudicators.

The public is invited to attend and there is no charge for admission. For more information contact AHS at 360-618-6300 or visit www.byrnesperformingarts.org.
