When members of the Everett Elks Club #479 visited Tulalip Elementary School to distribute free dictionaries, they saw a need for other kinds of books as well.

Using funds from a Elks National Foundation grant, the local members put together a list of children's book reviews and asked students in Mr. Cort's third grade class to choose their favorites.

"We used that list and purchased 61 books," said Linda Averill of Marysville and Elks member, "then we added barcodes and plastic covers to them so they could be included in the school's library checkout system." The donation came to just under $600.

On February 20, Elks members delivered the new books to Tulalip Elementary and hosted a party complete with juice and cookies.

Personalized bookplates were affixed inside the books, showing the name of the child who had selected the title.

"The children enjoyed seeing the books they had chosen," said Averill. "We were also able to donate about $70 worth of soccer balls, basketballs and even Nerf balls for the school."

Shown in the photo in the front (left to right) showing the books they selected are Nick Hungerford, Andrew Fryberg and Xochitl Alvarado. Elks members Ann Hall (left) and Linda Averill (right) are in the back.
