Marysville teacher wins conservation award

Karrie Valasques, a teacher at Marysville's Liberty Elementary School, has been recognized by the Pilchuck Audubon Society with a 2008-2009 Classroom Conservation Award.

The grant program was established three years ago to help teach elementary students about the need for conservation and preservation of natural resources. The $250 awards supplement Snohomish County elementary classroom teachers with funds for materials or activities for conservation activities.

"When most people hear 'Audubon,' they think of bird watching," said Mike Blackbird, president of the Pilchuck Audubon Society. "But we're not only about birds. We have a very broad and active conservation component as well."

Eight Snohomish County teachers were chosen to receive the award this year, from the Everett, Mukilteo, Lake Stevens and Marysville school districts.
