Tribal leader honored in gym dedication

The new gymnasium on the Marysville Secondary Options Campus will be dedicated in memory of Francis J. "Francy" Sheldon on Friday, December 19, at 6:30 p.m.

Sheldon's family shared some remembrances about the man who was an inspiration to youth and adults alike. "He was raised in a family that valued our whole community. He spent his life helping other, and he started coaching as a young child because he loved sports. He was dedicated to the community. From the long house to fishing, his work was inspirational. He was fundamental to Tulalip Tribes and helped build some of the basic facilities here on the reservation. His action emanated the importance of education in life. His commitment to family (grandchildren especially) and our people was his life. His life was well lived. He is a dearly loved and missed tribal leader."

The Marysville Secondary Campus was dedicated in May 2008 and is home to Arts and Technology High School, 10th Street Middle School and Heritage High School. The three schools share the gymnasium/administration building.

In a written release, Marysville superintendent Larry Nyland remarked, "The Marysville School District is honored to dedicate the gymnasium in the name of Francis J. Sheldon; a respected tribal leader and community member who is remembered by many for his generous spirit and unwavering support of youth."

The dedication ceremony will take place between two basketball games--the Heritage girls' game vs. Lummi High School and the Heritage boys' game vs. Lummi. Admission to the game is $4 for adults and $2 for senior citizens, visiting students and children.
