Third graders at Marysville's Grove Elementary were spellbound as Mike Gregoire, Washington's First Gentleman, read the humorous tale, "The True Story of the Three Pigs" by Jon Scieszka during a December 10 visit.

First Mike, as he's known throughout the state, took on the persona of the Big Bad Wolf to tell the familiar story from a different vantage point as the children laughed, listened and participated in the storytelling. The youngsters were students of teachers Cheryl Jones, Denise Scofield and Lynne Vanduren.

Gregoire's visit to the newest Marysville elementary school marked his 108th statewide school field trip. He has visited at least one elementary school in each of the state's 39 counties, including a stop at Arlington's Trafton Elementary in April of 2006.

First Mike also talked about a book entitled "E is for Evergreen," which is an alphabetical listing of features that are unique to Washington state.

After the reading, Gregoire took questions from the children, who mostly wanted to know about Trooper, the First Dog, and about the First Gentleman's favorite (and least favorite) foods.

In the spirit of the season, one youngster asked if Gregoire believed in Santa Claus. Showing grace under pressure, First Mike explained, "Santa lives in my heart, and the jolly old elf is a big part of our family's Christmas celebrations."
