Students and parents learn about SLC options
Parents and students who will attend Marysville high schools next year attended a recent information night at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
Designed to help families make informed decisions, the open house was staffed by teachers from each of the district’s Small Learning Communities (SLCs). The program, which was put into place last year, requires students to select a core curriculum for their studies.
Cheryl Hogle, a teacher at Mountain View High School, was enthusiastic as she talked about the school’s diverse population and its focus on celebrating successes.
“Our students need flexibility for a number of reasons, and we offer real alternatives that help them succeed,” she said.
The School of the Entrepreneur was represented by lead teacher Kyle Suits, who spoke favorably about the SLC concept.
“Schools are not typically risk-takers, so any step forward is a big one,” he said.
Each SLC program represented at the open house featured displays and materials for parents and students. The district’s 2008-2009 Guide to High School Graduation, which details curriculum in each SLC, was also available.
