Newly-elected city leaders officially began their tenure in Marysville and Arlington at each city's first meeting of the new year.

In late 2011, the cities also held recognition ceremonies for those leaders who were ending their civic careers, either by personal choice or as a result of voters' decisions. Arlington's Mayor Margaret Larson and councilmembers Linda Byrnes and Sally Lien each received gifts at a Dec. 19 gathering, while retiring Marysville councilmembers John Soriano and Lee Phillips were honored at a Dec. 12 reception at Marysville City Hall.

On Tuesday, Jan. 3, swearing-in ceremonies took place in council chambers at Marysville and Arlington's respective city halls.

Arlington welcomed new mayor Barbara Tolbert and freshman councilmembers Randy Tendering and Ken Klein. Returning to the City Council following the November election are Marilyn Oertle and Dick Butner, each of whom was unopposed.

In Marysville, Jon Nehring begins his first term as the city's elected mayor, although he has served in that capacity as an appointee since July 2010. Newly-elected Marysville councilmembers Rob Toyer and Steve Muller took the oath of office alongside returning members Carmen Rasmussen and Michael Stevens.

City Council meetings are open to the public. For more information, visit the official websites at www.arlingtonwa.gov and www.marysvillewa.gov.
