An elderly woman died in a February 10 house fire in the 6300 block of 23rd Avenue NE in Marysville. The Snohomish County Fire Marshal's office determined the fire was caused by the ignition of the victim's clothes after lighting a cigarette while breathing oxygen via a nasal canula.

Marysville Fire District responded to the scene at approximately 7:20 in the evening. Emergency response units found a single story wood frame structure with flames and smoke visible. Crews attempted to rescue the elderly female, but the fire was too hot. After putting more water on the fire, they were able to get into the home to remove her, but she did not survive.

Family members had attempted to rescue the woman, suffering minor burns on their hands and smoke inhalation.

Three engine companies, three aid/medic units, one ladder company and a Battalion Chief were called to the scene. Approximately 20 emergency crew members responded.
