More than 1,000 part-time jobs are being offered to local people with flexible schedules to be part of the 2010 national census effort.

The Everett census office serves Snohomish, Island, Skagit, Whatcom and San Juan counties, and is poised to begin the process of counting every person from the King-Snohomish county line to the Canadian border. Part-time workers are needed to serve as enumerators, counting their neighbors in the upcoming census.

The short-term jobs are ideal for retirees, college students, stay-at-home parents and others seeking temporary, part-time work. Those who speak English as a second language are also needed to make sure their communities are properly represented.

To demonstrate how the census operation works, the Everett Local Census Office will hold a public open house from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3. The office is located at 1615-75th St. SW, Suite #110, Everett. At the open house, people can learn about how the census is conducted, the types of jobs available and how to apply.

2010 census job applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid Social Security number, be able to pass a background check, and take a 30-minute multiple-choice employment test that measures knowledge, skills and abilities to perform a variety of census jobs. Testing sessions for the local region are offered during the day, evenings and on weekends. Phone 1-866-861-2010 to find the most convenient testing date and location.

A practice test is available online at www.2010censusjobs.gov.
