At least twice a year, the U.S. Postal Service reconfigures its carrier routes to maintain balance in the face of new housing developments or shopping complexes. Recent changes made to routes in North County Outlook's distribution area will mean that some folks who have been receiving the paper for free, every two weeks in the mailbox, will now have to subscribe to continue reading it.

If the newspaper staff had its way, our community newspaper would arrive in the mailbox of all 60,000-plus households in Marysville, Arlington, Smokey Point and Tulalip. Economic reality, however, dictates that our free distribution has to be supported by advertising revenue.

The new route boundaries, along with a need to control distribution costs, means those who live east of 67th Avenue NE or west of I-5 will no longer receive North County Outlook free of charge.

To help mitigate this change, subscription rates for the bi-weekly newspaper have been reduced from $25 a year to an even more affordable $19 per year.

Subscriptions can be completed online. Click on the button that reads "Subscribe" and you'll be directed to the online form. You can even pay for the one-year subscription online, via a secure PayPal link, using your bank account or credit card.

Free copies of the newspaper will continue to be distributed to public places, including both the Marysville and Arlington libraries, the chamber of commerce offices, senior centers and several retail outlets. If you prefer, drop by our office at 1331 State Ave. #B in Marysville, across from Value Village and next door to the Girl Scouts office, for your copy.

It's a little scary to tinker with the Outlook's established distribution map, but we are confident our readers will continue to seek out the "good news" we deliver twice a month.

Let us know how you feel about the paper. We always welcome comments and suggestions from our readers. Call (360) 659-1100, send an e-mail to editor@northcountyoutlook.com, or write to P.O. Box 39, Marysville, WA 98270.
