The completion of the City of Arlington's 6-month construction project at the municipal airport means airport administrators will finally have a clear view of the airfield in case of emergencies.

The $1.2 million expansion of the Arlington Airport office added 7,400 square feet to the existing 1,400 square foot building, in part to accommodate the state Department of Transportation Aviation Division offices, which are being relocated from a Smokey Point strip mall.

The larger space also features a shared reception area, a community meeting room that will become the new home of Airport Commission meetings, and a lounge with amenities for corporate pilots.

Sharing space and resources with the DOT aviation department allows both the state agency and the city to save money, according to state aviation director John Sibold. The agency's staff plans to move to the new airport facility in mid-December.
