With building and civil permits recently approved, Walmart's newest Snohomish County store will be located on 43rd Street, south of 172nd Street, next to the Safeway Plaza.
The mega chain will provide Arlington and surrounding area shoppers with low-priced essential and non-essential items and also feature a grocery section, similar to the design of the newly opened Walmart in Mount Vernon. Originally planned for 200,000 square feet, the building designers decided to scale back to 160,000 square feet of selling space. The national retailer's Arlington store is expected to create about 400 new jobs for the community.
Mayor Margaret Larson said, "We are excited to have Walmart come to Arlington. I'm sure it will meet the needs of many of our citizens."
According to David Kuhl, Community Development Director for the City of Arlington, the building officials for Walmart have confirmed that the project should take one year to complete, opening around Christmas 2010.
With the added development to Arlington, Walmart is responsible for adjusting to the growing traffic in the area by revising traffic lanes and signals, which will also be completed around the time of the opening next year.
