County Council candidates John Koster and Ellen Hiatt Watson will face off in a candidates' forum September 18 at a Business Before Hours event hosted by the Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce. The 2-hour breakfast meeting begins at 7 a.m. at the Tulalip Casino's Canoes Cabaret and is open to the public.
Chris Nation and Heather Thweatt, who are vying for an open seat on the Marysville School Board, will participate in the morning forum as well.
The council candidates will have an opportunity to explain their positions on various issues, including commercial air service at Paine Field, planning and development trends, and the need to work effectively with diverse departments and constituents. Koster, a Republican, has sat on the Snohomish County Council since 2001, following three terms of service in the state legislature. Watson is a community activist and organizer, a marketing and communications professional whose political involvement stems from the issue of rural land protection. She is endorsed by the local Democratic party.
Nation and Thweatt were the top finishers in the August primary election for the District 1 school board seat being vacated by Don Hatch. They will be asked to talk about their background and experience as it relates to school affairs, and will field questions about the economic realities of bond and levy requests, educational priorities, and their leadership styles.
The chamber's Government Affairs committee, chaired by Dave Toyer, has compiled a list of pertinent questions for each of the races. Candidates will be held to a strict time limit for responses and rebuttals to ensure fairness to all.
The chamber plans an October 9 forum to highlight candidates for the two contested seats on the Marysville City Council. Donna Wright, Quinn King, Jeff Seibert and Patrick Larson Jr. have been invited to participate.
To make reservations for the Chamber function, phone (360) 659-7700 or e-mail kimberlie@marysvilletulalipchamber.com. The cost of attendance, which includes a buffet breakfast, is $23 per person with pre-registration or $28 at the door.
