Drivers who use Cedar Avenue have noticed some significant changes to the downtown bypass route.

City crews recently completed an in-house striping project that created a new bike lane in both directions on Cedar Avenue and changed the traffic flow from four standard vehicle lanes to two much wider lanes.

"The wider lanes are much better and safer, especially for trucks that use this truck route," explained city spokesman Doug Buell. "As a minor arterial, Cedar Avenue is more than capable of handling traffic using just two lanes."

The project was approved by the City Council earlier this year as a low-cost project that fit the city's Downtown Master Plan and the transportation projections in the Comprehensive Plan.

With the new park and ride lot under construction at Cedar Avenue and Grove Street, the addition of bike lanes on Cedar is expected to encourage commuters to use bikes for at least a portion of their daily trips.

Marysville's Healthy Communities Project calls for an increase in bike lanes where feasible throughout the city.
